WHAT IS MINDFULNESS?

Jon Kabat-Zinn defines mindfulness as paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally. This practice is increasingly being used to reduce stress, improve concentration, manage difficult emotions and physical pain, and reduce unwanted behaviors. Mindfulness has been practiced for thousands of years, either by itself or as part or a larger tradition.

MINDFULNESS AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE

This program is not about telling participants what to do and what not to do. As a facilitator, my role is not to change participants. My role is to provide tools and coping skills to support one in reaching their self-decided goals.

I believe everyone has the ability to change themselves. In order to do this, one needs coping skills and tools which provide space to make those healthy choices that support reaching your goals. This is what the MBSAT program offers.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

Mindfulness skills support participants with the following:

  • Improve coping skills,
  • Manage cravings
  • Strengthen leadership skills
  • Improve relationships with family and friends
  • Gain a deeper understanding of the impacts of drugs and alcohol

MBSAT Participants Report:

  • An increased ability to manage strong emotions
  • Reduced impulsiveness
  • Reduced stress
  • Decreased cravings to use drugs
  • Ability to observe drug cravings without reacting
  • Decreased stress
  • Increased overall well-being
  • Decreased drug use

LION’S MIND

Lions Head

The concept of Lion’s Mind is woven throughout the 12 week program. It is meant to evoke a strong, focused, and awake/ aware state of mind. When one practices Lion’s Mind they can expect to find space to respond rather than react.
