Choose Your Own Adventure: 11 Musical Meditations

Making coffee, driving, working, making dinner, hanging out with friends/ family, working out… there’s a song for every occasion. Turning on the radio, plugging in headphones, or watching as the needle hits vinyl is the beginning of an adventure. And similar to a  Choose Your Our Adventure book, music takes us on a journey through crescendos, soft moments, and lively beats depending on who we choose as our guide.

Listening to music is more than a journey or leisurely pastime. Pushing play on your favorite song causes an immediate drop in blood pressure, release of dopamine (feel good hormone), and reduction in cortisol (stress hormone). I could get more into the science behind music and it’s connection to our nervous system, but when it comes down to it, you can feel it. You feel the changes in your body when you listen to music; the heart rate changes and chemicals are released into the blood stream. At it’s most basic level, music is vibrating energy and we are vibrating energy. No wonder we like music so much!

How To Practice Musical Meditation

Begin a musical meditation by choosing an artist, album, or song. Then, allow your choice to take you down a path. Finally, note your physical and mental response.

  1. Choose a song
  2. Listen
  3. Note how you feel

There is no need to choose Gregorian chants, Kirtan, or nature sounds. Choosing a song that resonates (..pun intended..) with one’s mood, energy level, and desired outcome is most important. For example, if the desired effect is groundedness, Ten Musical Minutes to Groundedness by East Forest would be a great match.
