Chocolate Chia Seed “Oatmeal”

The word chia means “strength” in the language spoken by ancient Mayan civilizations. Aptly named, these seeds are packed with essential omega 3-fatty acids, protein, anti-oxidants, and calcium. Because this seed has little flavor, it can be combined with many different foods as an energizing addition. For this recipe we’ll be adding it to one of my favorite foods, chocolate! 

Chocolate + Chia = Energy All Day!

Chocolate Chia Seed “Oatmeal”

5 Minute Prep                    1 Minute Blend                     8 Servings

Ingredients: 

3 cups milk alternative (read my nut milk recipes here!)

3/4 cup chia seeds

1/4 cup seed mix (equal parts pumpkin, sunflower, sesame, and flax seed)

Following are optional additions to sweeten or spice your “oatmeal”.

Chef’s choice! I recommend using them all.

*1-2 tbsp maple syrup, agave, raw honey, or Stevia

*2 tbsp cacao

*Spice it up! Mix in the following spices for an anti-inflammatory, digestion revving breakfast: 1 tsp. turmeric, 1 tsp. ginger (powder or fresh), 1 tsp. cardamom, 1 tsp. cinnamon, 1/8 tsp black pepper (to activate the turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties).

Instructions: 

Measure 3 cups milk alternative, pour into a blender – If you don’t have a blender, follow the steps below then whisk vigorously for 1-2 minutes.

Measure and pour chia seeds, seed mix, and any other optional ingredient into blender with milk alternative.

Blend on medium for 30 seconds-1 minute. Pour into a quart jar and allow to sit overnight.chocolate oatmeal jar

Your “oatmeal” will be ready in the morning! Enjoy!

Chocolate Chia Seed “Oatmeal” contains 8 (1/2 cup) servings. Depending on the additions, each serving contains 150-200 calories.

Chia Seeds: Loaded with fiber, protein, Omega 3 fatty acids, various micro nutrients, and loads of antioxidants, chia seeds are a power food like none other. They are great for those who need a lot of energy to start their day (I’m thinking teachers, firefighters, moms, runners, bikers, crossfitters, construction workers..everyone!). Chia seeds are also great for maintaining a healthy weight, because they are nutrient dense, containing protein and fiber.

Seed Mix: These seeds combined have all the Omega 3 fatty acids you need! Pumpkin Seed – Contains vitamin E and K, as well as minerals. Great for reproductive health. Sunflower Seed – Great source of magnesium, copper and vitamin E. Flax seed – high in fiber, ligans, and micronutrients. Sesame seeds – phytate (a cancer preventing compound which fights free radicals), magnesium, and fiber. Fights diabetes, cancer, and reduces blood pressure.

Raw Cacao Powder: 40 times the antioxidants of blueberries, highest plant-based source of iron, full of magnesium for a healthy heart & brain, more calcium than cow’s milk, a natural mood elevator and anti-depressant.
